Climate Change Initiatives Intern

Job responsibilities include:
Climate Change Events Intern will assist staff with events planning on Climate Change initiatives and indigenous people’s participation. This will include but not be limited to organizing, researching, and events logistics with Alliance staff, consultants, and other personnel including:
• Arrange for visas, airfare, lodging accommodation, food, transportation
• Ensure all deadlines are met and all pertinent information is provided to relevant parties
• Maintain organized files and notes of each delegate
• Work closely with staff in all communication with delegates (phone, email)
• Schedule weekly meeting with any consultants, event planners, etc for all events
• Take notes during weekly Amazon Forum 2009 Manaus Brazil preparatory meetings and send out with all pertinent information to the special events working group on a weekly basis
• Be a self-starter, independent worker who feels comfortable asking questions and researching other topics adhering to personal interest
• Interact with high level representatives of organizations, agencies, etc with discretion, maturity, and professionalism
• Be organized and able to multitask
• 20-30% of an intern’s time is administrative (answering phones, responding to requests from individuals for information, helping out with general tasks, filing ) and 70-80% is programmatic
Desired Skills:
• At least senior level or in graduate program in: International Relations, International Affairs, Political Science, Environmental Studies, Latin American Studies, Sustainable Development , Communication
• Fluent in Spanish, French, Portuguese, or Dutch
• Experience with interpretation and or translation highly desired
• High level of professionalism
• Able to work well under pressure
• Self-starter, independent worker who feels comfortable asking questions and researching other topics adhering to personal interest
• Organized and creative problem solver
The Amazon Alliance participants in critical international events such as Climate Change discussion and negotiations, UNFCC, World Conservation Congress the Amazon Forum and other climate discussions. This is crucial for the Alliance and all its indigenous and non indigenous members. These diverse meetings allow members representing the nine Amazonian countries, in partnership with NGOs, to identify and prioritize the most pressing threats for both the environment and its peoples in the Amazon Basin. They help outline a vision of working together, evaluate current working strategies, and develop new initiatives. These events also provide a venue for people working on grave issues in the Amazon Basin to come together and outline a direction for the Alliance.

Internships require a minimum time commitment of 15-20 hours per week for three months are open to both undergraduate and graduate students and are unpaid. Scheduling is flexible and academic credit can be arranged according to university guidelines.
